First Eucharist

s484149280865144626 p7 i1 w560

Students typically receive First Communion in second grade.
Preparation for this sacrament is a two-year program at St. John Neumann.
Students receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during their second year of classes.

We understand that this is a stressful time full of uncertainty. Please let us know how best to support you during this time.

Our First Communicants were asked to attend a class/retreat to finish preparing for their First Communion. Those students that missed the class need to watch this video and take the assessment quiz under it.
All of the answers to the assessment are included in the video.
There are some additional supplemental videos linked below that show how to receive the Eucharist during Mass.

Basic Requirements for Receiving the Eucharist:
  1. Be a baptized Catholic.
  2. Abstain for at least one hour before Holy Communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine.
  3. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession. Here is a How To Guide for Children.

We have scheduled our First Communion Mass dates! We will be splitting the students up into 5 groups. Seating in the Church will be one family per pew. We ask that you limit the seating to the immediate family of the student, OR a maximum of 6 people per family. Please let us know if you have any questions, doubts, or concerns.

Dress Code for First Communion

Boys:

  • Suit OR trousers with or without a jacket
  • Button down dress shirt (long or short sleeves) with a tie (optional)
  • Dress shoes and dark socks (no tennis shoes, please)

Girls:

  • White dress. Dress may have long or short sleeves, or be sleeveless as long as the majority of the shoulder is covered.
  • Dress may be long, if desired. Length should be knee level or longer.
  • White veil (floral headpiece is also appropriate)
  • White dress shoes and socks or stockings
  • Gloves must be removed if the host is received on the hand of the faithful.

It is important to remind the children that they are preparing to receive Jesus, our Lord and Savior, in a very special way. This is a great gift from our God that we should take seriously. Because of this, we remind the students that when they go to receive our Lord to be as reverent and respectful as possible. There are several ways we show respect and reverence to God.
* We bow before receiving Jesus.
* We say amen, which means "this is the truth", after the Minister of the Eucharist says "Body of Christ".
* We can make the sign of the cross after receiving our Lord.
* We can receive our Lord on the tongue. This is the preferred, and more reverent way to receive Jesus. Especially if one is able to kneel. If someone is not comfortable with this, the Church has allowed the faithful to receive on the hand.
