To my Dear St. John Neumann Family…

The main difference between animals and humans is that God gave the gift of reason to us. Animals react to external stimuli
and humans have the ability to think through the situations that confront us. That doesn’t mean though that we don’t react to
external stimuli. We do, but the difference is we often know why we act in a particular way. Our hand comes in contact with a hot stove, and we pull it away because of the pain, but also because we know if we leave it there, then we will be burned. When we rely only on our instincts or emotions without thinking it can cause us to do the right thing or the wrong thing. In the Gospel the prodigal son is confronted with a famine. At first, his shame keeps him from returning to his father. It is only when he has severe
hunger that he overcomes his shame and decides to go home. How many of us do not go to our heavenly Father to ask for forgiveness for our sins because of our shame. We shouldn’t wait as the prodigal son did until we are confronted with a serious problem. Our heavenly Father is always waiting for us. Let us not miss the opportunity that we are given to be reconciled with God. Our Lenten penance service is April 9th at 6:30 pm until all confessions are heard.

La diferencia principal entre los animales y los humanos es que Dios nos dio el regalo del razonamiento. Los animales reaccionan a los estímulos externos y los
humanos tenemos la abilidad de considerar detalladamente las situaciones a las que nos enfrentamos. Esto no significa que no reaccionamos a los estímulos
externos. Sí lo hacemos, pero la diferencia es que a menudo sabemos porqué actuamos de cierta manera. Nuestra mano entra en contacto con un quemador
de estufa, y nosotros la quitamos debido al dolor, pero también porque sabemos si la dejamos allí, nos quemaremos. Cuando dependemos solamente de
nuestros instinctos o emociones sin pensar puede causar que nosotros hagamos la cosa correcta o incorrecta. En el evangelio, el hijo prodigo es confrontado
con una hambre. Al principio, su vergüenza le impide regresar con su padre. Es solo cuando tiene una gran hambre que supera su vergüenza y decide irse a
casa. Cuántos de nosotros no vamos con nuestro Padre celestial para pedir perdón por nuestros pecados debido a nuestra vergüenza. No deberíamos
esperar como lo hizo el hijo prodigo hasta que nos enfrentemos con un problema serio. Nuestro Padre celestial siempre nos está esperando. No nos dejemos perder la oportunidad que se nos da para ser reconciliados con Dios. Nuestro servicio de penitencia cuaresmal es el 9 de abril desde las 6:30 pm hasta que se oígan todas las confesiones. Les animo a no olvidarse de completar la Encuesta del Índice de Creadores de Discípulos para ayudar al Obispo Martin a guiarnos en nuestra Fe y a SJN a desarrollar el talento necesario para asistirlo.
