To my Dear St. John Neumann Family…

In faith, we all know that the Lord came to serve us. He tells us this in the gospels. “I came to serve, not to be served.” In today’s Gospel, even though he is preparing his disciples for his return to the Father in heaven, his mission and service to us is not at an end. He tells them that when he goes, he will prepare a place for them and return to bring them to the place he is going. His ascension does not mean that his service and mission are at an end. It is about to take another form through his church that he established. The Lord tells them they know the way to where he is going. When Thomas says that he doesn’t know the way, the Lord gives his instruction. “I am the way, the truth and the life.” In other words, he is telling them to have faith in him and do what he has done. It means that we should serve all as he served us, we should live by the truth he has revealed to us, and our life should model the life that he has led while among us. So, when the question of serving all comes up in the early church, the Apostles’ response is to serve all by the creation of the diaconate. Therefore, we should understand that it is by our service that we offer spiritual sacrifices to God for the salvation of the world and thus continue the mission of Christ.

Con fe, todos sabemos que el Señor vino para servirnos. Él nos lo dice en los Evangelios. “El Hijo del Hombre no vino a ser servido, sino a servir”. En el Evangelio de hoy, aunque el Señor está preparando a sus discípulos para su regreso al Padre en el cielo, su misión y su servicio hacia nosotros no han llegado a su fin. Él les dice que cuando se marche, les prepará un lugar y regresará para llevarlos consigo al sitio donde Él va. Su ascensión no significa que su servicio y su misión hayan concluido; antes bien, ahora tomará otra apariencia a través de la Iglesia que Él mismo estableció. El Señor les dice que ellos conocen el camino hacia donde Él se dirige. Cuando Tomás dice que él no conoce el camino, el Señor le da su enseñanza: “Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida”. En otras palabras, les está diciendo que tengan fe en Él y hagan lo que Él ha hecho. Esto significa que deberíamos servir a todos como Él nos ha servido; deberíamos vivir de acuerdo a la verdad que Él nos ha revelado; y que nuestra vida debería modelar la vida que Él llevó mientras estuvo entre nosotros. Asi que, cuando en la Iglesia primitiva surge la pregunta de servir a todos, la respuesta de los Apóstoles consiste en servir a todos a través de la creación del diaconado. Entonces, debemos entender que es a través de nuestro servicio que ofrecemos sacrificios espirituales a Dios para la salvación del mundo y de este modo continuamos la misión de Cristo.
