To my Dear St. John Neumann Family…

One of the fallacies of the faith that I sometimes hear is that if someone practices their faith well, then the expectation is that the person should have peace and no hardships, only blessing from God. St. Paul in the Acts of the Apostles does not think that way, nor did the Lord say this to us. St. Paul exhorted those whom he met; “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” He speaks specifically of a life of prayer and fasting. The Lord himself told us at the end of the Beatitudes, “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.” The Lord also told us to carry our cross and follow him. Our crosses indicate the sacrifices that we must be willing to make and the hardships we must be willing to bear. So, the Lord tells us in the Gospel this week to love one another. This love, that the Lord asks of us, requires sacrifice for one another, as his sacrifice on the cross shows his love for all of us.

Una de las falacias de la fe que a veces escucho es que si alguien practica bien su fe, entonces la expectativa es que la persona debe tener paz y ninguna dificultad, solo bendición de Dios. San Pablo en los Hechos de los Apóstoles no piensa de esa manera, ni el Señor nos dijo esto. San Pablo exhortó a los que conoció; “Es necesario que pasemos por muchas dificultades para entrar en el reino de Dios”. Habla específicamente de una vida de oración y ayuno. El Señor mismo nos dijo al final de las Bienaventuranzas: “Bienaventurados serán cuando los insulten y los persigan y digan toda clase de mal contra ustedes falsamente por mi causa”. El Señor también nos dijo que cargáramos nuestra cruz y lo siguiéramos. Nuestras cruces indican los sacrificios que debemos estar dispuestos a hacer y las dificultades que debemos estar dispuestos a soportar. Así, el Señor nos dice en el Evangelio de esta semana que nos amemos los unos a los otros. Este amor que el Señor nos pide exige sacrificio los unos por los otros, como su sacrificio en la cruz muestra su amor por todos nosotros.
