To my Dear St. John Neumann Family…

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled and the one who humbles himself will be exalted. The Pharisee in the Gospel exalts himself before God by his actions and attitudes. The tax collector humbles himself before God and was justified by the Lord. When we pray, do we seek to exalt ourselves? We can do that by justifying ourselves before God, as the Pharisee did, or by the things we ask God to bless us with. And if God does grant us these things, then how do we use them to serve God or our neighbor? Do we use the blessings that God bestows on us only to serve ourselves? Sirach tells us today; “The one who serves God willingly is heard.” We serve God by obeying his commandments and by helping those in need with the blessings God has given us. So, if you want your prayers to be answered, humble yourself, as the Lord did to serve us, and serve God and neighbor.

El que se enaltece será humillado y el que se humilla será enaltecido. El fariseo en el Evangelio se enaltece ante Dios por sus acciones y actitudes. El recaudador de impuestos se humilla ante Dios y fue justificado por el Señor. Cuando oramos, ¿buscamos enaltecernos? Podemos hacerlo justificándonos ante Dios, como lo hizo el fariseo, o por las cosas con las que le pedimos a Dios que nos bendiga. Y si Dios nos concede estas cosas, ¿cómo las usamos para servir a Dios o a nuestro prójimo? ¿Usamos las bendiciones que Dios nos otorga solo para servirnos a nosotros mismos? El Sirácida nos dice hoy: “Quien sirve a Dios con todo su corazón es oído”. Servimos a Dios obedeciendo sus mandamientos y ayudando a los necesitados con las bendiciones que Dios nos ha dado. Entonces, si quieren que sus oraciones sean respondidas, humíllense, como lo hizo el Señor para servirnos, y sirva a Dios y al prójimo.
