To my Dear St. John Neumann Family…

In the Book of Kings this week we find King Solomon praying to God and receiving from God what he prayed for. When we pray, we don’t often find this direct link between what we pray for and God’s answer to our prayer. From the Scriptures, Jesus teaches us how to pray. First, he often prayed in solitude. In the Gospel of St Luke, we find: “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” He prayed for others in the Gospel of St. John: “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message.” When his disciples asked him how to pray, he taught them the Our Father. Notice that all the pronouns in the Our Father are plural. When we pray the Our Father, we are praying for ourselves and others. Lastly, he prayed that God’s will is done in the Gospel of St. Matthew: “Yet not as I will, but as you will.’” So, from the Lord’s example we learn to pray in solitude so as not to be praised for our prayer as the Lord tells us in the Sermon on the Mount. We need to pray for others as well as ourselves. King Solomon’s prayer was as much for himself as for the good for the people of Israel. And lastly, every prayer that we offer should seek the will of God to be done and not be only a request for what we want. Let us pray following the example of the Lord that God’s will for us and for everyone will be fulfilled.

En el Libro de los Reyes, vemos al Rey Salomón orándole a Dios y recibiendo lo que le pidió. Cuando oramos, a menudo no vemos esa conexión directa entre lo que pedimos y la respuesta de Dios. En las Escrituras, Jesús nos enseña cómo orar. En primer lugar, Él solía orar a solas. En el Evangelio de San Lucas, leemos: “pero [Jesús] se alejaba para orar en lugares solitarios”. Él oraba por los demás en el Evangelio de San Juan: “Pero no ruego sólo por ellos, sino también por los que van a creer en mí por medio de sus palabras”. Cuando sus discípulos le preguntaron cómo se debe orar, Él les enseñó el Padre Nuestro. Cabe notar como todos los pronombres en el Padre Nuestro son plurales. Cuando rezamos el Padre Nuestro, estamos orando por nosotros y por los demás. Por último, Él pidió que se hiciera la voluntad de Dios en el Evangelio de San Mateo: “Pero que no se haga lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú”. Así, siguiendo el ejemplo del Señor, aprendemos a orar a solas para no ser alabados por nuestra oración como el Señor nos dice en el Sermón del Monte. Necesitamos orar por los demás tanto como por nosotros. La oración del Rey Salomón era tanto por él mismo como por el bien del pueblo de Israel. Finalmente, toda oración que elevemos debería buscar que se haga la voluntad de Dios y no ser sólo una petición por lo que queremos. Oremos siguiendo el ejemplo del Señor para que se cumpla la voluntad de Dios para nosotros y para los demás.
